The beautiful holiday town Knysna is located in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and is known as the heartbeat of the famous Garden Route, which stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape. It has twice been voted South Africa’s Number One Favorite Town, and with good reason. It’s both friendly and convenient, with plenty of picturesque B&Bs, boutique shops and gourmet restaurants geared towards its booming tourist trade. It also has more than its fair share of attractions, many of which are inspired by the town’s spectacular natural setting. Here are our top things to do in Knysna.
Find tranquility in the forest
Knysna is surrounded by patches of state forest perfect for a wide range of adventurous activities including hiking and mountain-biking. The gorgeous Goldfield Forest is a popular spot for hiking with the ‘circles in the forest’ route. This scenic trail starts at the Krisjan-se-Nek picnic site and meanders past a swimming hole and waterfall. Two routes are available; the shorter being a 3.1km circle and the longer 9km.
Cruise the Knysna Lagoon
The Knysna Lagoon opens between two massive cliffs, known as The Heads. These stand tall, acting as rugged watchmen over the pristine loveliness of the lagoon. Here, exquisite views of the water surging through the narrowed entrance make for idyllic backdrops to your Garden Route excursion. Whether you’re in the mood for a day trip or a scenic sunset cruise, cruising along the lagoon on a pontoon is not to be missed. Along the route, guests may be lucky enough to spot some fish eagles, Oyster Catchers, or even a deer on the shore.
Culinary experiences
When it comes to culinary experiences, Knysna is the dream. It is known for their famous oysters – but besides oysters, it is famed for stunning fine dining restaurants, beautiful bistros and quaint cafes.
Knysna Elephant Park
Founded in 1994, The Knysna Elephant Park was the first facility in South Africa to house and care for orphaned African elephants. For marvelous elephant interaction and beautiful surroundings, the Knysna Elephant Park is an excursion of a lifetime. Experience an incredible scenic walk, meandering through the Park at elephant pace with panoramic views of the Outeniqua mountains and Knysna forest. Join their guides who will relate informative ‘elephant tales’ while you follow in the footsteps of these remarkable animals.
Knysna is a natural paradise of indigenous forests, tranquil lakes and endless beaches in South Africa. This makes it the perfect adventurers paradise in the heart of the Garden Route. Make sure you visit these places on our list to make sure your trip to this little haven in the Western Cape is unforgettable.
