What to get up to in the Northern Cape

Steeped in stark, semi-desert beauty, the Northern Cape Province is where you find solitude in a land of big skies and bold hues. From the red earth and golden grasses of the Kgalagadi (Kalahari) Transfrontier Park, to the kaleidoscopic wildflowers of Namaqualand, and the deep blue, cloudless skies of Kimberley. Whether you are looking for breath-taking scenery or an action-packed holiday the Northern Cape is the ideal escape. Here’s our list of 3 things you have to do in South Africa’s largest province.

Canoeing the Orange River

The Orange River is a must for anyone visiting the Northern Cape. Cutting through South Africa’s driest region, this incredible expanse of river attracts an abundance of bird and plant life. Spend your days paddling, bird watching and just lapping up the scenic beauty and your nights listening to the baboons call while you sleep under the stars.

Kimberley Big Hole

Visit the largest hand-dug excavation in the world, the famous Big Hole, and be transported back in time to the very beginning of Kimberley and the discovery of Diamonds. The size of eight football fields, this is the world’s largest man-made hole and one of Kimberley’s main tourist attractions. Visitors peer down from a viewing platform into the mine, now filled with water, and picture what it was like when thousands of men toiled here, hauling the rock up to the surface with cables. Afterwards, a visit to the Mine Museum takes visitors on a journey back through the heady diamond rush days.

The Red Dune Route

The Red Dune Route covers the area from north of Upington all the way to the Namibian border. This area is home to a vast variety of wildlife including gemsbok, springbok and black maned lion. Activities along the Red Dune Route include dune boarding, camel riding, 4×4 routes, game drives, guided walks and bird watching. You are also able to engage with the locals and experience local culture and customs as well as local cuisine.

Experience the wilderness. Be one with the vast desert sands. Celebrate, dance and feast with the San people. Gasp at the clear night skies and listen to ancient wisdoms around flickering fires. The Northern Cape is a must-see for anyone seeking an adventure. If you’re looking for exciting job opportunities in South Africa, make sure you click through to our job section.
